Consecutive translation: The Basics

There are a few types of consecutive translation:

• Phrase by phrase: the interpreter translates one phrase at a time after the speaker has finished. Generally, this type of consecutive translation is needed at low-key events attended by a limited number of people.
• Paragraph by paragraph: the interpreter renders a complete thought or monologue into the target language. Generally, this type of consecutive translation is needed at low-key events, receptions for foreign guests or for interactions in small groups.
• Visual consecutive translation: the interpreter looks at a written text of a speech and translates one phrase at a time. Generally, this type of consecutive translation is needed at research conferences or lectures.
• Note taking: interpreters translate a lengthy part of a speech (25-30 minutes long), using shorthand to write down their translation. Once the speaker has finished the interpreter uses these notes to render the presentation into the target language. Generally, this type of translation is needed at formal events.
