What’s the difference between simultaneous translation and consecutive translation?

A simultaneous translation is performed at nearly the same time as when the speaker is delivering his/her speech. Generally, this type of interpreting is needed at large, international meetings or foreign film festivals when it is not feasible to take any breaks or it is necessary to translate into a few languages.

A consecutive translation differs from a simultaneous one insofar as the interpreter listens to a speaker for anywhere from two to ten minutes and then translates him/her into the target language. This type of interpreting is widely used at business meetings and negotiations, receptions, exhibitions, and many other kinds of events.
